I was pleased to attend the webinar on developing fundraising strategy today. And I was even more pleased that Fundraising Everywhere kindly offered to host it on their brilliant platform, because we were originally going to host it on my Zoom, and were pleasantly surprised by the huge interest the seminar topic generated! This saved me the stress of being on the door and worrying about tech, so thank you, Nikki, for stepping in.
It was a great line-up, which probably explained why there were so many takers for the session. My Twitter notes can all be found by clicking through from the embedded tweets below.
I'm here at @FundEverywhere for the session on developing charity fundraising strategy in uncertain times, with the brilliant @LizziHollis @ClaireyJaneR and @MarthaAwojobi. Lizzi, who put the event together, is kicking things off. Notes in this thread …#fundraisingstrategy pic.twitter.com/cMTCF9HatD— Richard Sved (@richardsved) June 30, 2020
First up, Dr Claire Routley spoke excellently about strategy development after a crisis:
Understand the environment you're operating in really well, & the forward looking part is much easier.— Richard Sved (@richardsved) June 30, 2020
Are you planning to be a leader or a follower? Both approaches have advantages. Or you could be on the continuum in between.

Next, Martha Awojobi spoke powerfully about the importance of our organisational culture:
Who's in your fundraising team? More importantly, who's missing? Is it diverse? Do your team shared lived experience? Who has decision making power? Are they diverse? What about your donors? Do they mirror your fundraisers? If no, yr #fundraisingstrategy will be less successful. pic.twitter.com/Xi4vehoD3O— Richard Sved (@richardsved) June 30, 2020
And finally, event organiser Lizzi spoke well about her experience of developing fundraising strategy during the pandemic “at the coalface”.
Think about the ebb and flow of giving.— Richard Sved (@richardsved) June 30, 2020
Phase 1: initial bump – surge in emergency giving
Phase 2: dip in giving – where a lot of us are now, how can we shore ourselves up?
Phase 3: the surge

Thanks again to the Fundraising Everywhere team for hosting this webinar, and to Lizzi for putting it together. So much to think about.
