UK Grantmaking 2025: giving by trusts and foundations has overtaken giving by government bodies
If, like me, you’re very interested in funder information and statistics to help guide your own fundraising work, it’s well worth visiting UKGrantmaking, which provides an overview of who makes grants across all funding sectors – Government, Trusts and Foundations, National Lottery distributors, Donor-Advised Funds, and Charities. And it looks beautiful too.
The 2025 edition has just been published, looking at data from 2023-24, with the information collation led by a range of heavyweights: 360Giving, Pears Foundation, The Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF), The Association of Charitable Organisations (ACO), UK Community Foundations (UKCF) and London Funders.
Over £20 billion of grants were distributed in 2023/24. Grantmaking by Trusts and Foundations increased by 12% compared to the previous year to £8.2bn, which means that Trusts and foundations have overtaken government bodies as the largest source of grant income to the voluntary and community sector (although government remains the main provider of contract income).
