“What are you trying to change?” – developing an integrated fundraising strategy
I attended an excellent session last week, organised by Open, at which Sarah Fitzgerald O'Connor (Strategy Director at Open) and Gaby Murphy (Director of Development & Fundraising of Concern) spoke about developing an integrated fundraising strategy. All my notes can be found below.
What do we mean by strategy? You have a visionStart with your diagnosisMake a clear plan
Why... what... how.
Start with evidence and insightLook internally and externallyWhat are you trying to change?Cluster what's emerging as strategic objectives
Get buy in, engagement, ownership & insight of/from staff.Allow team to prioritise. They are closest to what's going on and can see the opportunities and frustrations. Work out who to get involved at which point.Think RACI, enablers, & blockers
"We have put our fundraising team at the heart of the strategic plan, to nurture and empower people to succeed." Gaby Murphy, @Concern.
"Take time up front to get foundations for growth and change in place when doing your strategic planning. Reap the reward in later years."
Integrate.Align your organisation strategically, in its marketing, and tactically.
"Every time I do the shopping I write a shopping list. But when I get there I don't need to read the list, because the PROCESS of writing the list means that I remember what I need to buy." Gaby Murphy
Yes. Strategy development is all about process.
Very kind of Gaby to recommend 'Fundraisin
